Flung into gritty sand, pushed and beaten unmercifully. He tried to run, he tried to hide, and he tried to escape into himself. Nothing seemed to stray, to stop his tormentors.
"He's such a geek."
"Ha! More like a yellow bellied lizard."
They laughed at his wretchedness, at their cruelty. Finally they left him to find another source of entertainment. Their leader directed the gang away from the otter leaving him on the ground. The terrorizes’ voices slowly drifted and where cutted off by the crashing surf. The otter slowly pushed himself to his feet. A small gash above his brow trickled with blood. He ignored it, quickly limping off in the opposite direction of the gang.
The gang was any creature and every creature but there were the unvarying members that were the instigators. The ringleader and her cronies caused havoc whenever possible. Of course they were punished but the weasel was a street urchin allowing her complete freedom of her actions. Linwe was her name. How the otter despised that insufferable rodent.
Lynn limped around and over the sandy dunes. Coarse shrubs helped him steady himself along the shifting landscape. The otter finally stumbled onto his favorite spot along the beach. It was a small inlet created by an ancient dried up rivulet. Lynn shivered and panted. These painful confrontations where starting to take their toll emotionally and physically.
Bullying wasn’t half as bad compared to the loneliness Lynn felt. No one had ever stood up for him. No one had ever given him a helping hand or a kind smile. No one even talked to the otter except to tease and taunt him. Everyone, including what many creatures thought as gentle sweet girls, came to watch Lynn be batter. They watched, encouraged, and contributed to the otter’s misery.
Lynn shivered and his body ached but did not pant anymore. He gathered himself against a rock shelf. The water dog drew his legs to his body, rested his head on his knees, and then closed his eyes. For only a moment he tried to imagine peace.
Soft filtered light and waltzing specs of dust drifted through the air on a background of reddish-pink. A strong but gentle voice spoke. It did not speak out loud. It spoke just to Lynn; it came from inside him. Put on courage. Face your fears. Face them now.
To be continued.
*Linwe the weasel is my other character.
